Wayanadu Breakout!!!

December 9th, 2009 by jintos | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

We were looking at options to spend our long weekend holiday and zeroed in on Wayanad. We were warned of the Monsoon rains, but then we wanted the rains and it turned out to be real good. The two days we spent there, the weather was picture perfect- occasional showers and the clouds and mist playing hide and seek in the romantic sense.

We started our journey from Cochin in the morning and we reached calicut by noon time. we have to pick Jojo from calicut for the trip. After reaching calicut we decided to stay back at Jojo’s house and decided to roam around calicut. Kappad beach is a good place to relax, but for us there was something else in calicut. So we decided to hit Manamchira squre (which is known as lovers park <nick name> – said by local guy). It was good. Some purchase was pending and focuz mall was good enough for us. The next day morning by 09.30 am we started our journey. The Calicut-Wayanad route(90kms) is really simple and we drove covering Thamarassery – adivaram - Kalpetta . Kalpetta is the district headquarters of Wayanad. The hairpin drive was superb; I always enjoy driving through hairpins.

We reached Kalpetta at 11.00am and checked into Home stay @ Meppadi (Love dale Home stay) this is very near to the Suchipara water falls. We were six of them and there were 3 rooms available in the house with a big hall. We had our breakfast at the house and the food was excellent. The cook and the care taker Mr.Shaji, he has got a good skill of cooking. We had the Puttu and kadala, appam and curry. One of my friend Baiju he was very passionate for puttu kadala. (I think all the malayali’s like that dish. Me tooooo).

After break fast we were wondering what to do next, bcoz all became lazy after seeing the weather and the wonder full surrounding of the home stay. So no body wants to go for sightseeing now. The owner of the House Mr. Doice, he came up with an idea to go for a plantation visit and later on proceed towards the Suchipara water falls. Some of our hardcore guys were asking about trekking and jungle safari and doice promised us he will arrange everything for us. Doice has got a wonderful plantation near to the home stay. It was good feeling while walking through the plantation. Then went towards suchipara water falls. By seeing the water we decide to jump and we guys started playing and enjoying in the water. We spend almost 2 hrs in the water and decided to go back to the home, b’coz we all started feeling hungry after the long walk and swimming. By the time doice arranged a jeep for us to go for the jungle safari to churalmala and for the trekking also.

The lunch was yummy. Cook shaji again made wonders with food. Then we started our journey in four wheel jeep to Churalmala. It was wonder full journey in the jeep through tea estate and jungle, driver shibu was excellent and some times he made us excited with his driving skill. We reached our trekking point Jeep can’t go further and from that point we have to walk. We started the journey towards the hill top, and there was some small water stream and small water falls in the area. Water was too cold. it took us 2 hrs to reach the top of the hill; the view was excellent from the peak. We relaxed there, some were cracking jokes and some were fighting for the water. Spending more than half an hour we decided to go back to our place. Place was getting little dark and there was a sign of rain also. We went down and shaji was waiting for us with his jeep and we headed towards home stay. We all were tired and just want to sleep after the trekking and jeep safari. After having bath in the cold water, all our tiredness was out and so we decided to put a camp fire. Shaji arranged the camp fire and we started our fun with songs and little drinking (plz don’t mind) . We made our self some barbeque with the help of the cook and it was fun. Shaji served us the food along with the camp fire. Camp fire lasted till 02.00 clock in the night, poor fellow shaji was awake all the time providing us with snacks and other things. By 02.30 am we were back to bed and we decided to cover maximum places next day.

Next day morning shaji was waiting for us with a bad news, Itz raining, heavily raining. Time was 10.30 am in the morning but its raining. So all our plans for seeing the place gone with the winds. So after having breakfast some guys decided to take rest (sleeping) and rest of us decided to play cards. But it was boring playing cards whole day so after lunch we decided to hit road in rains, so we decided to play football with one goal post. There was a paddy field near to this house and it was empty after the harvest and place was muddy after in the rain. So we started playing foot ball in that area, some call it as mud foot ball, but for us it was fun foot ball. It was a continues rain in wayanad. After the game and tea decided to check out from the house and go back to Calicut (Jojo’s house.) after having the early dinner from the house, we checked out by 08.30 pm and started our journey back to calicut. All were tired after playing foot ball in the rain. We reached Calicut by 10.30 pm and stayed at Jojo’s and we kept the vehicle at his home and decided to take train in the morning. It was a good journey even though we were not able to see the places due to the rain, but we enjoyed thoroughly. Especially the Jeep safari and trekking and the last day’s foot ball not but the least the food. It was just excellent. (Thanks to Shaji – Cook).

Some times rain allows you to enjoy itz beauty at most in a different way.

Guys who are coming from Cochin to wayanad do take a break at a Calicut. Because the journey to wayanad in one stretch will make u tired and you won’t be in a good mood to enjoy the places and the fun while driving. There some good home stay and budget hotels are available in the town. Those who want little expensive, those kind of hotels are also available and please don’t miss to taste Malabar Biriyani while in Calicut.

Nehru Trophy Boat race, Kerala, India - A Traveller Experience

August 11th, 2009 by jintos | No Comments | Filed in Customer Testimonies
Nehru Trophy Boat Race - 2009

Nehru Trophy Boat Race - 2009

It was my first experience … the moment I waited for … the event I watch in television from my childhood…. VALLAMKALI (Boat Race) called as famous Nehru Trophy Boat race of Alleppy, Kerala. Oohh… at last I made it. Just came back to my office after watching the magnificent VALLAMKALI in alleppey.

I went with my friend to watch this event. We use to travel in Bike for kilometers, this time we decided to go in train. When we landed in Alleppey , the whole city was crowded with men and women, and foreign tourist dancing with the rhythm Shinkari melam, taking snaps….etc We decided to go to the pavilion very early because our tour operator told us to reach as early as possible to the pavilion to avoid the last minute rush and also the boat service will be only for limited time due to the security reason.

When we entered the pavilion , we saw People cheering for there team, most popular was Kaarichal chundan, last year winner and chambakulam Chundan. When I got seat in the pavilion met with some guyz in who was supporting Karichal chundan and we also decided to join with them. But unfortunately they lost the battle in photo finish. Kalabhavan Mani ( A famous filmstar in kerala, India) was the captain for Kaarichal Chundan. So our first choice lost the battle ,so we decided support other team – that’s Paayippattu chundan. My luck or their bad luck they also lost the battle in the final finishing as second. But it was tough battle they lost for seconds. These guys they covered 1350 meters (that’s almost more than one kilo meter) in 4 minutes and 57 seconds. It was just wonderful. 150 people standing shoulder to shoulder for competing the event. Congarts to CHAMBAKULAM CHUNDAN…. They deserve the win… and congrats and thanks to travelgoogy also for providing us an opportunity to watch this mega game, thee stay they provided us with the pass was good. It was a home stay near alleppey. Neat and clean and the food was excellent. Thanks once again travelgoogy and the guyz behind it. But next time we decided to hire a house boat and watch the Nehru Trophy Boat race event with all my friends and family. Hope travelgoogy can support in that.

Bangalore - Wayanad Weekend Trip

March 1st, 2009 by BangaloreTraveller | No Comments | Filed in Travelogues

( Updated on June 20, 2009 - Recommended Homestay in Wayanad

After this blog post, there were so many mails which i received asking for recommendation on affordable stay in Wayand. I strongly recommend opting for a homestay accommodation as wayanad has plenty of them. So if you are going as a group, staying in a house rather in hotel in wayanad will be a wonderful experience.

TravelGoogy.com has such an option avaialable in their offerings.  have a look at

http://www.travelgoogy.com/tg/hotdeal/hotdealsWayanad.php

You will get a house at your disposal ! If you are going as part of a group of six, you will be only paying Rs. 650 per head per day and breakfast is included. The homestay is located in walkaway distance from Soochipara waterfalls. Even if you are just a couple, i strongly recommend this option as it will cost you only Rs 2000/- but you get a full house for you and your loved one. )

Wayanad, misty hill-station in kerala always was my favourite destination. I specially love the drive from bangalore to wayanad for its good roads and beautiful Scenaries. so when my friend asked me to join him for a trip to wayanad as he has to meet somebody in a place called meppadi in wayanad, i happily jumped in. We decided to drive my Tata Indigo this time. We decided to start on a saturday morning from my home at banshankari.

We both woke-up at 4.30 AM and get ready and started the journey by 5 AM. We took Uttrahalli-kengeri road to catch bangalore-mysore highway at kengeri. It was a easy ride as traffic was very less in early morning and road in super condition. If anyone driving to wayanad, i recommend to start early so that you can reach mysore in no time. Only point to note is there are so many humps in this expressway to kill your joy of driving. most of them are put by nearby villagers and none of them have white lines or reflectors on it.. so beware of humps while you are driving in nights !

We reached mysore by 7 AM, as we are crossing through mysore place, we decided to click a snap of the palace… its a masterpeice, imagine buidling this palace in those times where there were no machines, JCB’s or even concrete.. !!

Mysore Palace

We decided to have a tea and naturally our choice was Kamat Madhuvan on the mysore - calicut/ooty road. Its a nice place, in the evenings they always have live music performances of classical musics. I liked their Tea in the early morning, impact if i ever drive to wayanad in the early morning from bangalore.. i always have a small tea from kamat madhuvan and my breakfast from Jubilee, Sultan Bathery, Waynad which i like for their typical kerala non-veg breakfast !!

Kamat MadhuvanMadhuvan

Started from kamat madhuvan after a quick tea, and drive through Njangode, Gundalpet and Bandipur forest. from Gundalpet you need to take calicut route to reach wayanad and road is very good now sparing few areas. The good thing about this road is you are going through forest for almost 13-15 kilometers 90% of the forest area belongs to karnataka and reamining belongs to Kerala. I always love to drive through this part as its a pleasure to see all those greenaries, elephents, monkys etc. But………… this time i am hugely disappointed as the rise in temperature hardly hit this forest area and all those greenaries which i adore were missing….. insted i saw only trees without any leaves… an un forgottable sight…

Forest Warning boardForest Road - Bandipur

Moreover we didnt seen any animals on the way, looks like again becasue of rising mercury ! (i read it in today’s news paper (28-Feb-2009) that wayand wildlife santury is closed for another one month becasue of rise in heat !!) The only thing which we saw was some monkys…And one happy monkey family got my camara’s attention.

Happy FamilyKamat

By 9.30 we reached kerala border, the blue board welcomes us to God’s own country - Kerala. they also has a board which details about the main tourist attractions in wayanad. Kerala tourism board is one of best managed tourism bodies in india. They really market kerala in all sense…

Welcome boardTourist board

Its only 13 KM from kerala border to nearest town Sultan Batheri, biggest town in Wayanad district. We reached Batheri by 9.30 AM, drove straight to Jubilee Restaurant and had our breakfast. So that means if anybody starts driving from bangalore early morning hours, you are in wayanad by mere 4 hours 30 minutes!!!. After breakfast we took Ambalavayal-vaduvanchal route to go to Meppadi. We choose that route becasue of its beauty, most of the vaduvanchal-meppadi stretch is going through Harison malayalam team plantation….. we know that eventhough its summer, the tea plantations will look green ! . we were not wrong… see some exotic pictures below…. ( click on the image to view in full size)

We were in meppadi by 10.45 AM. We spend entire day over there as my friend has to finish all his work. We started back from meppadi by 5 PM and reached Sultan batheri by 5.45 PM. We decided to have our dinner early for two reasons, one, we can drive non-stop to bangalore without stopping for dinner, second, ofcourse dont want to miss another chance to eat at Jubilee :) . After dinner we started from Batheri around 6.10 PM, eventhough roads were very busy compared to our morning drive, we managed to reach back bangalore by 10.45 PM.

Following are the recommendation for people who wants to visit wayanad and would like to drive through…

  • Start early, say around 4.30-5 AM to have a easy drive.
  • Plan it on a weekend, start either friday or saturday morning based on your choice.
  • Wayanad has some very good homestays and resorts, book your accomadation well in advance. Weekends are usually sold-outs in entire wayanad due to crowd from bangalore and mysore. You can contact www.TravelGoogy.com to do the same with very attractive prices.
  • Plan your days well to cover all main tourist places in wayanad or you can leave that job to your tour operator. the main attractions in wayanad are Edakkal Caves , Wayanad wild life sanctuary, Muthanga , Chembra peak , Meenmutty falls , Soochipara Waterfalls , Banasura sagar project , Pookot lake , Pakshipathalam , Kuruva Island , Pazhassi Tomb , Thirunelly temple , Jain Temple.
  • Plan for 2 days to cover all these, preferably 3 days to cover evething in a relax mode.
  • start the return journey by 4 PM from wayanad and you will be in your bangalore home by not later than 10 PM including dinner time.
  • Banalore - wayanad round trip will be approximately 520 - 550 KM based on where you start from bangalore excluding local sight seeing.  so if you driving a decent mileage giving Diesel car, it will cost your purse just Rs 1300/- and Rs. 2200-2500 with a petrol car.

Bangalore - Wayanad Driving Route

You can follow the below route to reach wayanad. Sultan batheri is one of the big city in Wayanad and from there you can proceed to other tourist destinations

Bangalore - Mysore - Najangode - Gundalpet - Sultan Batheri

Plan a trip to wayanad and Enjoy !

A Day With An Elephant (Customer Testimonies)

February 19th, 2009 by joseph | 2 Comments | Filed in Customer Testimonies

travelgoogy arranged  a special event “a day with an elephant” in my kerala package. the tour package was fantastic, and that day with elephant was that much interesting, that i cant forget it. that day, i could ride on the elephant top(which was that much thrilling) thank u Mahout rajan who kept away my fear. i came to know that elephants r so silent and not fearsome. they even play with us. i could feed them. they  took me to elephant hospital where i could see ailing elephants under treatment. the docter explained and took a small class about elephants which was highly informative. afternoon after typical spicy kerala lunch, i was able to see the bathing of elephant which was mind blowing

Once again thanks travelgoogy for providing this opportunity
