Snake boat
(Chundan Vallam) race is held in Punnamada Lake, Kuttanadu, Alleppy in
connection with Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala. Scores of long
snake boats and other smaller crafts participate in this event.
Thousands of tourists throng the watersides of Alappuzha to witness the
spectacular boat race.
The 100-120
feet long
canoes carrying 90 - 110 rowers which moves like a snake through the
channels (hence the name), is an eye catching sight for any tourist.
The Chundan Vallam also has the record as "the biggest water vessel
used for sports purpose". There are separate races for women too. The
race begins with a colorful pageant of floats, performing arts and
decorated boats.
